The writer asks a question of the group mind:  In your opinion, did the characters “eat too much”?  Thank you for your forbearance.

I enjoyed the book. Good to see Padi getting her life sorted out.

I’m looking forward to seeing Gordy again. I see he’s still off screen, but getting closer. It seemed to me that this was something approaching a running gag in “Salvage Right” that every few chapters, we’d get another report from Gordy on when he would show up. I thought a good alternative title for “Salvage Right” would be, “Waiting for Gordo.”

  • Terry  says:

Very well done! A fitting end to this phase, although I do wonder about naming a daughter Aramis. Will she be not only a handful, but a musketeer? Very much looking forward to going back to Tinsori Light and my favourite crew.

  • Sarah Stapleton  says:

Lovely! Perfect way to spend a snowy day.
That all happened in, what, twelve days?
Possible loose ends and “what about…?” issues were tied up neatly and expeditiously at the end, to be dealt with off-stage.
I don’t think they ate too much/often. It is a legitimate concern in this world and appropriate to the story; a reminder of the pervasive influence/impact of the Ambient. No more than there were too many references to Ribbons.
As a retiree, I loved all of the highly skilled elders coming out to use and share their expertise. Or sharing their life-skills in retirement and refusing to be side-lined, as is Aunt Asta.
Is the Summerlands a reference to an earlier story that I’ve forgotten? There are some stories I haven’t reread as often.

  • Mallory  says:

Very much enjoyed the story. I don’t particularly feel like the amount of discussion of eating rose to a level of being noticable – it felt very on par with Ribbon Dance.

  • Kathryn Sullivan  says:

‘No one wants an incident.’ I don’t think they ate too much. Whatever they ate was burned off rapidly.

  • othin  says:

Grate storry – I loved it. I don’t remember any mentioning of the summerland before and I also wonder about the name Aramis.
Thanks for the reference to the musketiers, Terry, i didn’t remeber it. After checking i also got that Aramis was the most religious of the three.
Aunt Asta is a treasure! She proves that elders often can’t resit medeling – and shoun’t. But then Aunt Asta is a master of the art to make others aprtiate her medeling. She might teach that. I also like the way Dyoli found to teach others, like she said to her brother.

  • Kathy Ferrando  says:

I just read it, feel like my hair should be floating around my head as well. Love the idea of the individual grid, changing civilization indeed. I think Entilly’s (sp) special cookies got lost in the list of the other cookies but otherwise the food was fine. Very glad to see Mr. De G. Back in the story, and Tinsori Light and Gordy etc. Thank you Sharon! Oh, how did you select Aramis as the name?

  • Sharon  says:

I wanted something that reflected Priscilla’s culture. In Hebrew and in Spanish, Aramis is said to mean, “child of the moon.” Aramis *is* my favorite Musketeer, but that was only secondary to my choice.

  • Joann  says:

I noted the decline in Talents on Colemeno – which echoes the decline in the dramliz population among Liadens mentioned in previous books. Through Moonhawk’s reminiscence we know the remaining original dramliz are practically defunct; she and Lute chose to dissipate into the ambient … does the future hold a universe without magic? At least Healers are still common, unless Lina’s understanding is out of date.

  • Gareth Griffiths  says:

Lovely story. As its an Earc do you want any typos etc reporting – or did I miss a link for that?

    • Bookgeek  says:

It was such a lovely surprise when the eARC was released. I am enjoying the discovery of a new setting such as when Korval moved to Surebleak. I am so glad to see that it seems that Colemeno may avoid the rigid caste structures of Liad with the integration of the civilized and the wild. Looking forward to seeing the impact on the emerging worlds of Surebleak and Colemeno by the failed retirees of Liad and other worlds. I am also very glad to return to Tinsori Light to learn of progress there. A very satisfying read indeed. Well done!

    • Sharon  says:

There is no Tyop Hunt this time, due to Baen’s greatly compressed timeline.

  • Art  says:

As for eating too much, I felt Shan’s relief of not constantly eating once back onboard was perfect counterpoint. Ergo the plot device was excellent, IMHO.

  • Janet M Schroeder  says:

Absolutely not on the ‘eating too much’ question. You’ve not only got social gatherings, you’ve got great expenditures of energy that *require* replenishing spent calories.

Did my usual ‘gulp’ of the book and I’m about to start on a more aware reading.

I wasn’t aware of any connection to ‘Aramis’ except that (iirc) it was the name of a fave cologne of my ex-husband that I liked a lot (good thing because he really overdid it).

My only wish is that we might have seen more of Mr dea’Gaus. But I like that he and Aunt Asta seen to like each other!
